Basic explanation about proxy sites

Proxy sites as name tells are computers that stay between you and Internet. Imagine proxy site as a service that gets data from remote server and than send it back to you. Meanwhile, remote server don't know who is actually requesting a service, page or file because you didn't directly requested it. Proxy did it for you and then forwarded it to you. As you can see, proxy site is protecting your computer in a way that remote server could contain viruses or might block your IP or country which you are connecting from. Some web services are checking for incoming IP first, like YouTube or Facebook. Using proxy sites you can avoid those limitations and surf through Internet protected and without revealing your real IP address.

Should I use proxy and why?

Using proxy sites you are hiding your actual IP adress which could reveal quite much informations about you. By hiding your IP (unique address on Internet attached to every PC online) you are hiding your location, ISP, name and all informations that are sent through protocol. Proxy is "taking a risk for you" and sending back to you files and services while you stay protected. By UN's Declaration of Humans rights, since SOPA/PIPA aren't implemented yet, you are able to use proxy and using proxy to hide your privacy is your right.

How proxy site works?

Proxy explanation is very simple. Internet consist of a lot, milions of computers. When you want to reach certain website, you are actually accessing remote computer. Proxy is nothing else but computer that gets data for you from remote computer (server) and send it back to you (user). Proxy works on the way that server fetch data for you from server or web resource and send it to you, like on the picture below:

Some proxy sites are using SSL, why?

Main reason why some proxy webmasters are implementing SSL is to keep privacy level of users on even higher level. SSL is script that every informations first crypt and then send to remote server. Secure Socket Layer or shortly SSL uses complex system of encryption so your data couldn't be accessed by third party sides. There are two ways to know if is connection secured with Secure Socket Layer. One of the ways it to write "https" instead of "http" or you can check in your browser if is lock icon somewhere in lower-right part of the window, like on this pic, then it means proxy site implemented SSL certificate:

Most of the proxies don't have SSL installed though. For more informations about SSL and data encryption please click at this Wikipedia resource.
